Distortion is a fundamental ingredient for wailing solos, roaring riffs, and the whole metal genre. If you are looking for some aggressive drive for your tone, adding a distortion pedal to your rig could be worthwhile. Unlike overdrive or fuzz pedals, distortion pedals are the most aggressive and hardest edged among the dirt and drive pedal group.
