Boss has lifted the veil on two new digital stompboxes spec’d from its legendary RE-201 Space Echo—the RE-2 and RE-202.
Stripping the RE-201 sound down to its core essentials, the pedalboard-friendly RE-2 Space Echo sports an 11-way mode selector, with access to a trio of digital tape heads with or without spring reverb. The echo/reverb mix is adjustable via separate level controls, while the Wow & Flutter dial allows for further adjustment.
Other notable features include extended delay time, tap tempo or twist controls, and external control support courtesy of a separate jack.
Meanwhile, the RE-202 Space Echo recreates not only the look but also all the controls of the original Space Echo, including the 12-way mode selector.
In terms of sonic behavior, Boss promises “complete accuracy,” from gradual pitch adjustments to runaway feedback.
“Built by the company that designed the original, this advanced pedal captures the RE-201’s magic in flawless detail, from the magnetic tape and motor properties to the vibrant spring reverb and colorful preamp circuit,” Boss said, adding, “And to take things even further, we’ve expanded the vintage Space Echo experience with lots of new features tuned for today’s music.”
The Boss RE-202 Space Echo retails for $399, while the RE-2 Space Echo lists for $299.
